Residents of Grenfell Tower, the 27-storey residential west London tower block that went up in flames on Wednesday morning, raised repeated concerns about the building’s safety.
According to the Grenfell Action Group blog, tenants said only a “catastrophic incident” would make the building’s landlord pay attention to its “dangerous living conditions.”
There have been “number of fatalities” in Wednesday morning’s blaze, while more than 50 others are injured.
A post on Wednesday morning on the Grenfell Action Group blog read:
“Regular readers of this blog will know that we have posted numerous warnings in recent years about the very poor fire safety standards at Grenfell Tower and elsewhere in RBKC (Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea).”
“ALL OUR WARNINGS FELL ON DEAF EARS and we predicted that a catastrophe like this was inevitable and just a matter of time.”
Kensington and Chelsea declined to comment when contacted by Business Insider. Nicholas Paget-Brown, the leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, told the BBC a “thorough investigation is needed.” He said that council buildings undergo fire inspections and safety guidance is issued to residents.
Wednesday’s Grenfell Action Group blog post went on to list a number of links to previous blogs posted on the site “trying to warn” Kensington and Chelsea council and the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO).
In November 2016, a post titled “KCTMO – Playing with fire!” read:
“It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders.”
“We believe that the KCTMO are an evil, unprincipled, mini-mafia who have no business to be charged with the responsibility of looking after the everyday management of large scale social housing estates and that their sordid collusion with the RBKC Council is a recipe for a future major disaster.”
The post went on to say the Grenfell Action Group thought that “only an incident that results in serious loss of life of KCTMO residents,” such as a “serious fire in a tower block,” would make the landlord pay attention.

The Tower narrowly avoided a “major fire disaster” in 2013, according to the blog, after a period of “terrifying power surges” caused by faulty wiring.
“We believe that our attempts to highlight the seriousness of this event were covered up by the KCTMO with the help of the RBKC Scrutiny Committee who refused to investigate the legitimate concerns of tenants and leaseholders.”
A number of other fire safety scandals have also been reported on the blog.
